How to apply

At a consulate. Online pre-registration on the eViza portal (eviza.mae.ro), then in person at the Romanian embassy or consulate in your country of residence; the residence permit is later requested at the General Inspectorate for Immigration office for your county.

  1. Create an eViza account, select the long-stay visa for other purposes as a digital nomad, upload the supporting documents and wait for the consulate to validate the file.
  2. Attend the consulate in person with the originals, your passport and the EUR 300 fee; the visa decision follows within about 30 days.
  3. Enter Romania on the D visa (90 days of stay, single or multiple entry) and register your address.
  4. At least 30 days before the 90 days run out, book an appointment on the Inspectorate's portal and apply at the territorial immigration office to extend your right of residence as a digital nomad, with updated income and insurance proofs.
  5. Collect the residence permit card; repeat the extension before each expiry while you still meet the income and remote-work conditions.

After you arrive

Renewal: Long-stay visas are granted with a right of stay of 90 days; the nomad then applies to the General Inspectorate for Immigration to extend the right of residence, which is issued as a residence permit, in practice for one year at a time. Extensions are requested in person at least 30 days before the current right of stay ends.

Residence: Romania grants long-term residence after five years of continuous legal stay, but the Inspectorate's long-term residence rules exclude some temporary categories and do not state whether digital-nomad residence counts; confirm with the territorial immigration office before relying on it.

Taxes

Under the Fiscal Code a digital-nomad visa holder who stays no more than 183 days in any 12 months is not treated as a Romanian tax resident on income from the foreign employer or company; beyond that you become tax resident and pay the 10% flat income tax on worldwide income plus any applicable social contributions.

In practice

  • The route is dedicated and in force: Law 22/2022 added digital nomads to article 49 of OUG 194/2002 and consulates issue the D/AS visa for it, so the dataset's old 'no nomad visa' entry was wrong.
  • The income bar is one of Europe's highest (about US$5,790 a month) because it is pegged to three times the average gross salary used for the social-insurance budget, which rises every year.
  • The visa fee jumped from EUR 120 to EUR 300 for eViza applications validated from 27 April 2026; budget for the higher amount.
  • Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca have the biggest remote-work scenes; Sibiu is smaller and cheaper. Romania joined Schengen fully in 2025, so the residence permit gives 90-in-180-day travel across the area.

For your passport

Choose your passport in the ranker and the notes that apply to you move to the top.

  • EU, EEA, CH:You do not need a visa. Register with the General Inspectorate for Immigration for a registration certificate after three months in Romania.
  • US, GB, CA, AU, NZ, JP:Visa-free for 90 days in 180 in the Schengen area, which lets you scout, but the digital nomad visa must be requested at a Romanian consulate in your country of residence; you cannot switch from visa-free status inside Romania.
  • MD, RS, MK, ME, BA, AL, GE, AM, AZ, UA:Your countries have EU visa-facilitation agreements that reduce short-stay visa fees, but the long-stay digital nomad visa still costs EUR 300 and follows the same income rule.
  • All other passports:Apply through eViza and the Romanian consulate responsible for your country of residence; a prior consultation procedure applies to some nationalities and can lengthen the 30-day decision.
