How to apply

In the country. General Inspectorate for Migration (Inspectoratul General pentru Migrație), One-Stop Shop for documenting foreigners in Chișinău, in person or through an authorised representative.

  1. Enter Moldova (visa-free for 90 days in 180 for most Western passports) and secure housing with a lease or a hotel accommodation contract.
  2. Prepare apostilled and translated copies of your foreign employment or service contract (or a recent company registry extract if you are a shareholder), your criminal-record certificate and health insurance valid in Moldova.
  3. Obtain six months of bank statements in Romanian or English showing monthly income of at least three forecast average salaries, and write a free-form sworn statement that you work remotely.
  4. Submit the application at the IGM One-Stop Shop in Chișinău, pay the state and examination fees, and give biometrics for the card.
  5. Collect the biometric temporary residence permit after the 10- or 30-day decision; apply for extension at least 30 days before it expires with the same documents minus the criminal-record certificate.

After you arrive

Renewal: Granted for the requested period up to two years and extendable for further periods of up to two years under the same conditions; the law sets no overall cap. Extension papers must be filed 30 calendar days before the current permit expires.

Residence: Law 200/2010 allows permanent residence after continuous temporary residence (generally three years for family members of citizens and five years otherwise), but the digital-nomad pages do not say whether nomad years count; ask the Inspectorate before planning on it.

Taxes

You become a Moldovan tax resident after 183 days in a tax year and are then taxed on worldwide income at the 12% flat personal rate; the 7% Moldova IT Park regime applies only to employees of resident IT Park companies, not to digital-nomad permit holders working for foreign entities.

In practice

  • This is a dedicated route: Law 200/2010 article 37² defines digital nomads and the Inspectorate began accepting applications on 20 September 2025, so nomadVisa is true. It is separate from the IT Visa Program, which covers foreign staff of Moldova IT Park resident companies.
  • There is no consular visa stage; you apply after arrival. Visa-required nationals need a long-stay visa from a Moldovan consulate first.
  • The income test is high for the region (about US$2,930 a month) and is checked over six months of bank statements, so start collecting statements in your name early.
  • Chișinău is the only realistic base and the only IGM One-Stop Shop for this route; Moldova is outside the EU and Schengen.
  • The General Inspectorate for Migration is moving its website; its September 2025 announcement of the digital nomad route no longer resolves, so the official document lists on old.igm.gov.md and the Invest Moldova Q&A are the pages to check.

For your passport

Choose your passport in the ranker and the notes that apply to you move to the top.

  • EU, EEA, CH:Visa-free for 90 days in 180 and you can file the application in Chișinău during that stay; EU citizens must lodge extension papers at least 15 days before their current stay ends.
  • US, GB, CA, AU, NZ, JP:Visa-free for 90 days in 180; arrive, gather the documents and apply at the IGM One-Stop Shop. No prior consular visa is needed.
  • All other passports:If your nationality needs a visa for Moldova, obtain a long-stay (D) visa from a Moldovan consulate before travelling, then apply for the residence right at IGM after arrival. The income rule is the same for everyone.
