Mexico temporary residency 2026: requirements and cost

Mexico has no digital nomad visa. Remote workers who want more than the 180-day tourist stay apply at a Mexican consulate for a temporary resident visa on economic solvency, showing either monthly income (US$4,630 at the Las Vegas consulate in 2026) over six months or savings (US$78,025 average) over twelve. The visa gives one year, renewable to four, and then permanent residence.

Who can apply

Any nationality. The economic-solvency route is open to anyone who can prove the income or savings threshold; the application is made at a Mexican consulate abroad, not inside Mexico, except through family-unity routes.

What you need

  • Visa application form, printed and signed
  • Valid passport (original and copy) and one passport-size photo
  • Proof of economic solvency: bank or investment statements with an average monthly balance above the consulate's twelve-month threshold, or six months of statements with monthly income above the income threshold
  • Documents backing the income: employer letter, employment contract, pay slips or pension statement; self-employed applicants show a business licence or, without one, client 1099s, pay stubs, direct-deposit records or rental contracts
  • Bank verification letter confirming the account holder and statements, split month by month
  • Proof of payment of the US$56 visa fee
  • For the INM canje: the visa, passport, entry record (FMM), the basic INM form, fee receipt and three photos (two front, one right profile)

Income proof: The federal Lineamientos set the thresholds as 300 days of the general minimum wage in monthly income (six months of statements) or 5,000 days as an average balance (twelve months); each consulate publishes its own US-dollar equivalent and updates it on its own schedule, so figures vary by consulate and year. The Las Vegas sheet also lists US$1,498 a month per dependant. This figure is the consular threshold, not a nomad-visa threshold.

Family: A spouse or partner and minor children apply for temporary resident visas 'por unidad familiar' at the consulate or, once you hold the card, at the INM; the sponsor must show about US$1,498 a month (or an equivalent average balance) per dependant.

How to apply

At a consulate. A Mexican consulate or embassy abroad (any consulate, not only the one for your residence, although many prioritise local residents); then the Instituto Nacional de Migración office nearest your Mexican address for the canje within 30 days of entry.

  1. Email or book an appointment with a Mexican consulate and print and complete the visa application form.
  2. Assemble the solvency proof: six months of bank statements with monthly income above the consulate's threshold plus the employer letter, contract, pay slips or 1099s, or twelve months of statements with the average-balance threshold; statements must be split by month and verified by the bank.
  3. Attend the interview with your passport, a photo and the originals, pay the US$56 fee and collect the visa (usually within 10 working days).
  4. Enter Mexico within 180 days on the visa, keep your entry record (FMM), and within 30 calendar days file the canje online at the INM, pay the MXN 3,916 fee and attend for fingerprints and photo.
  5. Receive the one-year temporary resident card, renew for up to three more years at the INM, and apply for permanent residence after four years.

After you arrive

Renewal: The consular visa is valid 180 days for a single entry; within 30 calendar days of entering you exchange it (canje) at the INM for a one-year temporary resident card. Renewals can be granted for one, two or three more years up to a total of four years of temporary residence.

Residence: After four uninterrupted years as a temporary resident you can request a change to permanent resident at the INM (gob.mx/inm). Permanent residence can also be requested earlier on other grounds, such as family ties or the points system. Permanent residence is typically possible after 4 years.

Taxes

Mexico treats you as tax resident if your home is in Mexico, or if your centre of vital interests is there (more than half your income is Mexican-source or your professional activity is centred in Mexico); mere presence is not the test. Tax residents pay progressive tax up to 35 percent on worldwide income, subject to treaties; most remote workers paid from abroad with a home elsewhere remain non-resident but should take advice.

In practice

  • Mexico has not created a digital nomad visa: the economic-solvency temporary residency is a general long-stay route, so this guide's nomadVisa flag is false and the income figure is the consular solvency threshold.
  • Tourists (visitante sin permiso para realizar actividades remuneradas) get up to 180 days on a single entry with no extension, and this status cannot be converted to residency inside Mexico except through family unity; immigration officers at airports now often grant fewer than 180 days.
  • Thresholds differ between consulates and some still quote 2025 figures; check the sheet of the consulate you will use, and expect some to accept only residents of their district.
  • The 30-day canje deadline after entry is strict; entering on the visa and then leaving before the canje cancels the process.
  • Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca City and Playa del Carmen all have large nomad communities; the Riviera Maya and Baja are the most expensive.

For your passport

Choose your passport in the ranker and the notes that apply to you move to the top.

  • EU, EEA, CH, GB, US, CA, AU, NZ, JP:Visa-free as tourists for up to 180 days on the FMM, but the temporary resident visa must be requested at a consulate before travelling; it cannot be obtained from tourist status in Mexico.
  • AR, BR, CL, CO, PE, UY, CR, PA:Most Latin American passports enter visa-free; Brazilians, Colombians, Peruvians and Venezuelans currently need a visitor visa or a valid US, Canadian, Schengen, UK or Japanese visa. The solvency route works the same way.
  • All other passports:Nationals who need a visa even for tourism apply for the temporary resident visa at the consulate in the same way; holding a valid US visa does not replace it for residency.

How long can you stay in Mexico on the Temporary resident visa (economic solvency), and can it be renewed?
1 year, renewable up to 4 years. The consular visa is valid 180 days for a single entry; within 30 calendar days of entering you exchange it (canje) at the INM for a one-year temporary resident card. Renewals can be granted for one, two or three more years up to a total of four years of temporary residence.
Does the Temporary resident visa (economic solvency) lead to permanent residence in Mexico?
Yes. After four uninterrupted years as a temporary resident you can request a change to permanent resident at the INM (gob.mx/inm). Permanent residence can also be requested earlier on other grounds, such as family ties or the points system.
Can family members come with you on the Temporary resident visa (economic solvency)?
A spouse or partner and minor children apply for temporary resident visas 'por unidad familiar' at the consulate or, once you hold the card, at the INM; the sponsor must show about US$1,498 a month (or an equivalent average balance) per dependant.
Do you pay tax in Mexico on the Temporary resident visa (economic solvency)?
Mexico treats you as tax resident if your home is in Mexico, or if your centre of vital interests is there (more than half your income is Mexican-source or your professional activity is centred in Mexico); mere presence is not the test. Tax residents pay progressive tax up to 35 percent on worldwide income, subject to treaties; most remote workers paid from abroad with a home elsewhere remain non-resident but should take advice.

At a consulate: A Mexican consulate or embassy abroad (any consulate, not only the one for your residence, although many prioritise local residents); then the Instituto Nacional de Migración office nearest your Mexican address for the canje within 30 days of entry.
Can I switch from tourist to temporary resident inside Mexico?
Not on economic solvency. The INM only regularises tourists into residency through family unity (a Mexican or resident spouse, child or parent) or humanitarian grounds; otherwise you must obtain the temporary resident visa at a consulate abroad and exchange it within 30 days of entering.
Why do Mexican consulates quote different income figures?
The federal Lineamientos set the thresholds in days of the general minimum wage (300 days of monthly income or 5,000 days of average balance), and each consulate converts them into local currency on its own schedule. Minimum-wage rises of 12 to 20 percent a year mean the dollar figures jump each January and some consulates lag.
