After you arrive

Renewal: Issued for up to two years. The resolution does not provide a renewal as such; when it expires you apply again if you still qualify. Each stay in Colombia under a Visa V is limited to the visa's validity and the visa lapses if you stay outside Colombia for more than six months.

Residence: Visitor (V) visas carry no intention of permanence under article 23 of Resolución 5477: only time on Migrant (M) visas accumulates toward the Resident (R) visa. To settle you would move to a Migrant visa, for example as a rentista or through marriage, and later to a Resident visa.

Taxes

You become a Colombian tax resident after 183 days of presence in any 365-day period (continuous or not) and are then taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates up to 39 percent, subject to treaties. Below that threshold only Colombian-source income is taxed; remote salary paid abroad is foreign-source.

In practice

  • Visa-exempt tourists get 90 days on entry, extendable to 180 in a calendar year, and can file the online application while in Colombia, so many nomads scout first and apply from Medellín or Bogotá.
  • The 2026 minimum wage (and therefore the income threshold) is set by a transitional decree while the Consejo de Estado reviews the original one; check the figure before applying.
  • You may not work for Colombian companies on this visa; doing so is grounds for cancellation.
  • Register the visa and get the cédula de extranjería within 15 days or face a fine; the cédula is needed for leases, bank accounts and SIM contracts.

For your passport

Choose your passport in the ranker and the notes that apply to you move to the top.

  • AR, BR, CL, UY, PY, PE, EC, BO:Eligible, and MERCOSUR nationals also have the alternative of a Migrant visa under the MERCOSUR residence agreement, which does lead to residency.
  • All other passports:Nationals who need a visa to visit Colombia cannot apply for the nomad visa; alternatives are the Migrant visa categories (employee, rentista, independent) or a Visa V for other purposes.
