Curaçao remote-worker permit 2026: requirements and cost
Curaçao's @HOME programme gives remote employees, foreign-company owners and freelancers with clients abroad a six-month short-stay permit, extendable once to a year, for a flat XCG 535 (about US$299) with no published income threshold. You apply online, await the decision abroad and pay no Curaçao income tax; Dutch and US passports can simply stay six months as tourists.

Who can apply
Any nationality. You must be able to work location-independently and fit one of three profiles: employee under contract with an employer registered abroad, partner or shareholder working for a company registered abroad, or freelancer or consultant with contracts from clients whose establishments are abroad. Working for or being employed by a Curaçao company is not allowed. Nationals who need a Kingdom visa to visit Curaçao must still obtain it from a Dutch embassy or consulate before travelling.
What you need
- Proof of payment of the XCG 535 fees and retributions
- Clear colour copy of the passport photo page (and signature page if separate); passport valid at least six months on submission
- Employees: recent employer's declaration from the employer abroad, or a recent certified copy of the employment contract
- Company owners: recent declaration of assignment (verklaring van opdracht) from your own company abroad; freelancers: contracts with clients established abroad
- Valid international travel or medical insurance covering the stay (a prerequisite for approval per the @HOME FAQ)
- Return or onward ticket matching the approved stay, shown on arrival
- If a representative files for you: original signed authorisation letter (under six months old) and a copy of their ID
- Dependants: proof of the family relationship (marriage or birth certificate) and, for children under 18, written consent of the legal representative
Income proof: No minimum income is published. Means of subsistence are shown with a recent employer's declaration or certified employment contract from the employer abroad, or a recent declaration of assignment if you own the company; freelancers show their client contracts. The parallel snowbird (hibernator) purpose instead asks for at least XCG 36,000 in funds, a house or apartment in Curaçao, or a yacht of 10 metres or more moored there. Tourists are expected to show about US$1,000 a week at the border.
Family: Spouse, partner and dependent children can come. Each family member files their own short-stay application under the main applicant and pays XCG 535; there is no family bundle fee. Applicants aged 12 or over sign their own form. Add proof of the family-law relationship and, for under-18s, the legal representative's consent to the stay.

Paid by transfer to the Ministry of Finance account at Maduro & Curiel's Bank (BIC MCBKCWCU) with the payment order from the form; international transfer costs are yours. Each family member pays the same fee. A tourist extension costs XCG 525 and a Dutch or US 'van rechtswege' declaration about XCG 615. |
| Processing time | 2 weeks to 17 weeksThe @HOME FAQ says an application takes about two weeks to process. The Admission Office's general rule is that it has four months to decide, that a first application must be awaited abroad, and that the decision is e-mailed; you then book an appointment to collect the permit in Willemstad. A refusal can be objected to within six weeks. |

How to apply
Online. Online through the @HOME in Curaçao portal (athomeincuracao.com, forms in English, Dutch or Spanish) or the Admission Office's digital application portal (permit.immigrationcur.org, purpose 'short stay'); the permit is collected in person at the Toelatingsorganisatie, Prinsenstraat 90, Willemstad.
- Check that your work fits one of the three profiles (foreign employer, own foreign company, or foreign clients) and gather a recent employer's declaration, certified employment contract or declaration of assignment, plus your client contracts if freelance.
- Pay XCG 535 per applicant to the Ministry of Finance account at Maduro & Curiel's Bank using the payment order (attachment D of the form), with your full passport name and date of birth as reference, and keep the proof of payment.
- Complete the online @HOME application for the remote-worker purpose, ticking 'Kort Verblijf', and upload PDF scans of your passport photo page, proof of payment, work documents and international health or travel insurance; each family member aged 12 or over signs their own application.
- Wait for the e-mailed decision abroad (about two weeks per the FAQ, up to four months by law); if you applied while on the island within your tourist stay, remain within that allowance.
- Travel with a return ticket matching the approved period, make an appointment with the Admission Office in Willemstad to collect the permit, and apply for the one six-month extension before the first period ends.
After you arrive
Renewal: The short-stay permit is issued for a maximum of six months under article 9 of the Admission and Deportation Ordinance (LTU). The @HOME FAQ states that remote workers can request one extension of another six months, so the maximum is one year, after which you do not become a resident. An extension application can be awaited on the island; a first application must be awaited abroad.
Residence: The Admission Office states that a remote worker does not become a resident after the permit year. A permit for an indefinite period normally requires ten years of uninterrupted lawful residence on ordinary temporary residence permits, which short-stay time is not; the separate investor permit (investments from XCG 500,000) is the route to longer residence.
Taxes
The @HOME FAQ states that remote workers under the programme will not be required to pay Curaçao income tax, because the permit is a temporary stay that does not make you a resident. You keep paying tax where you remain resident, and your employer or clients stay abroad; working for or billing Curaçao companies is prohibited. Nothing in the scheme replaces an employer's own payroll or permanent-establishment analysis.
In practice
- Dutch and US citizens can already stay six months a year as tourists and, per the @HOME FAQ, keep working remotely without this permit; for longer stays they apply for a 'verklaring van rechtswege' instead, which has no fixed end date.
- EU, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Japanese passports get 90 days a year as tourists; other visa-exempt nationals get 30 days and can request a tourist extension (XCG 525), filed 5 to 7 days before the stay ends; visa-required nationals are limited to their visa's validity.
- Applications are normally filed from abroad and the first decision awaited abroad, but the @HOME FAQ allows filing while on the island inside your tourist allowance (within 90 days).
- Dutch is the sole language of administration and legal matters, although the portal and forms exist in English and Spanish; scans must be straight, unedited colour PDFs or the file is delayed.
- The Admission Office may ask for a guarantee deposit (waarborgsom) on admission, set by nationality and refundable on departure; a return ticket is checked at the border.
- Willemstad (Pietermaai, Punda, Otrobanda and Jan Thiel) hosts most remote workers; fibre internet and 4G are widely available and the island is outside the hurricane belt.
For your passport
Choose your passport in the ranker and the notes that apply to you move to the top.
- NL, US:You can stay six months a year as a tourist and continue working remotely without the @HOME permit; for longer stays or local work, apply for a declaration 'van rechtswege' (about XCG 615), which allows an indefinite stay.
- EU, EEA, CH, CA, AU, NZ, JP, GB:Visa-free for 90 days a year as a tourist; the @HOME remote-worker permit is the way to stay six to twelve months. File from abroad or within your tourist stay.
- AR, BR, CL, CO, MX, VE, DO, PE, UY:Most Latin American passports enter visa-free for 30 days; Colombians, Dominicans and some others need a Caribbean Kingdom visa from a Dutch embassy. The permit itself is open to every nationality, but a visa-required national still needs the entry visa, and extensions of a plain tourist stay cost XCG 525.
- All other passports:All nationalities can apply. If your passport needs a visa for the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, obtain it at a Dutch embassy or consulate before travelling; visa-exempt passports get 30 days as tourists while the permit is pending.
