How to apply

Online. Online through the ICP smart services website or app (UAE Pass login) for any emirate, or through GDRFA Dubai's website, app, Customer Happiness Centres or Amer centres for Dubai. Your presence in the UAE is not required for issuance.

  1. Confirm you work remotely for an organisation outside the UAE and can show a salary certificate of at least US$3,500 a month.
  2. Create a UAE Pass or ICP account (or a GDRFA Dubai account), choose the virtual work residence service and complete the application form.
  3. Upload your passport, photo, proof of remote employment outside the UAE and salary certificate, then pay the fee.
  4. Travel to the UAE once the entry permit is issued, take the medical fitness test, buy UAE health insurance and give biometrics for the Emirates ID.
  5. Upload the medical result, insurance and Emirates ID receipt to complete the residence permit, then renew it before expiry each year.

After you arrive

Renewal: Issued for one year. GDRFA Dubai describes it as subject to renewal, and u.ae says the programme is renewed by re-applying; there is no stated cap on renewals while you still meet the salary condition.

Residence: The UAE does not grant permanent residence on the basis of years spent on ordinary residence visas. Long-term status exists only through the separate 5- and 10-year Golden Visa categories, which have their own investment, salary or talent criteria.

Taxes

The UAE levies no personal income tax on salaries or freelance income. You can obtain a UAE tax residency certificate after 183 days in a 12-month period (or 90 days with a permanent home or job in the UAE), which matters mainly for your home country's treaty position. Corporate tax applies only to businesses, not to foreign salaried employees.

In practice

  • ICP handles Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates; Dubai residents go through GDRFA Dubai. Both apply the same US$3,500 salary rule, but fees and portals differ.
  • Renewal is a fresh application with updated salary proof and insurance, not an automatic extension, so keep payslips and bank statements current.
  • The permit does not allow you to work for UAE-based employers or clients; for that you need a work permit or a free-zone licence.
  • A 60-day grace period applies after the permit expires or is cancelled, during which you must renew, switch status or leave.

For your passport

Choose your passport in the ranker and the notes that apply to you move to the top.

  • EU, EEA, CH:Enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180 to scout, then apply online; the remote work permit can be issued while you are abroad or inside the UAE.
  • US, GB, CA, AU, NZ:Visa on arrival for 30 days (extendable), so you can visit first; the permit application itself is fully online and does not need you to be in the country.
