Nationals of 114 listed countries (including the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, India, China, Japan and South Africa) can apply before travelling; everyone else enters on a tourist visa and applies online during the stay.

## What you need

- Premium Visa application form completed online
- Bio-data page of a valid passport
- Passport-size photo (first application only)
- Copy of airline ticket, including a return ticket for a stay beyond six months
- Travel and health insurance covering the intended period of stay
- Letter of accommodation for the whole stay: hotel booking, rental agreement or an invitation letter from a host with proof of address and a copy of the host's ID, passport or residence permit
- Bank statements for the last three months
- Proof of monthly income: employment contract or attestation of monthly revenue showing at least US$1,500 per adult and US$500 per dependent child
- For dependants: marriage certificate, children's birth certificates (in English or French) and a consent letter when a child travels with only one parent

Income proof: Stated in US dollars by the Economic Development Board: a minimum of US$1,500 a month for each adult and US$500 a month for each dependent child under 24, shown with the last three months of bank statements and an employment contract or an attestation of monthly revenue. No conversion needed.

Fee: The Premium Visa is issued free of charge and there is no processing fee. Only Occupation Permit and retiree Residence Permit applications carry an EDB application fee (US$50 from December 2025) and statutory permit fees.

Processing: The authority publishes no service standard: the e-visa is simply emailed once the online file is validated. Applicants report anything from a few days to a few weeks; apply well before your intended arrival or before your tourist visa runs out if you are already in Mauritius.

## How to apply

Online. Online through the Economic Development Board's Premium Visa portal (business.edbmauritius.org), either from abroad or from inside Mauritius while on a tourist visa; the visa is issued by the Passport and Immigration Office on the EDB's recommendation.

1. Check whether your nationality is on the EDB's list of 114 countries that may apply before travelling; if not, enter Mauritius on a tourist visa (up to 180 days in a calendar year for most nationalities) and apply during your stay.
2. Prepare the file: passport bio page, passport photo, return air ticket covering a stay beyond six months, travel and health insurance for the whole stay, and a letter of accommodation (hotel booking, lease or host invitation with the host's ID and proof of address).
3. Gather evidence of funds: bank statements for the last three months and an employment contract or attestation showing at least US$1,500 a month per adult and US$500 per dependent child, plus marriage and birth certificates in English or French for dependants.
4. Complete the online Premium Visa form on the EDB portal and upload the documents; there is no fee to pay.
5. Watch your email: the e-visa is sent electronically. Print it for the airline and immigration, and apply online again for renewal before it expires.

## After you arrive

Stay and renewal: Issued for a period exceeding six months up to one year, multi-entry, and renewable online with the same proofs. For applicants applying from abroad the one year starts on the day of arrival and the visa stays valid for travel for six months; for people already in Mauritius on a tourist visa the length follows the validity of their insurance and return ticket (both must exceed six months).

Residence: The Premium Visa is a long-stay visa, not a residence permit, and does not count toward permanent residence. Holders who want to work locally, invest or retire for longer switch to an Occupation Permit or a Residence Permit for retirees through the EDB (those permits have their own fees and conditions).

Family: A spouse and children can be included in the same application with their marriage and birth certificates; the income requirement rises by US$500 a month for each dependent child under 24 and each adult must show US$1,500 a month. Children cannot attend the public school system on this visa without separate arrangements.

Taxes: Mauritius Revenue Authority guidance says Premium Visa holders are taxed only on money remitted to Mauritius: spending with foreign cards is not treated as remitted, while money deposited in a Mauritian bank account is taxable unless you declare (form PV1, by 15 October each year or on departure) that tax was already paid on it in your home country. Holders need not register with the MRA unless they have taxable deposits, and the social contribution (CSG), NSF and training levy do not apply. Staying more than 183 days still makes you tax resident under general rules, so take advice if you plan to keep significant funds locally.

## In practice

- A tourist visa on arrival already allows up to 180 days a year for most nationalities, so the Premium Visa only becomes necessary for stays beyond six months; many people enter as tourists and convert online.
- Keep your insurance and return ticket longer than six months if applying from inside Mauritius, because the visa length is aligned to them.
- The visa does not allow local employment or a local client base; invoicing Mauritian companies would require an Occupation Permit instead.
- Port Louis is the business centre but most remote workers base themselves in Grand Baie, Tamarin or Flic en Flac on the coast; electricity and fibre are reliable in the main towns.

## By passport

| Passports | Note |
| --- | --- |
| EU, EEA, CH, GB | On the EDB's pre-arrival list, so you can apply from home. You also get a tourist visa on arrival for up to 180 days a year, which many use to scout first. |
| US, CA, AU, NZ, JP, KR, IN, ZA | On the pre-arrival list; apply online before travelling or convert from a tourist visa after arrival. |
| All other passports | Nationalities not on the EDB's list of 114 countries must first enter Mauritius on a tourist visa (some need a visa in advance) and then submit the online Premium Visa application during the stay. |
