- Application form MVIS8, signed, with passport photos
- Valid passport (copy of the data page and entry stamp or visa)
- Employment contract with an employer registered outside Cyprus, or contracts and invoices showing self-employed work for clients abroad

Fee: EUR 70 for issuing or renewing the temporary residence permit and a one-off EUR 70 for registration in the Aliens' Registry, so EUR 140 for a first application. Each family member pays the same fees. Translations and certifications of foreign documents cost extra.

Processing: The Migration Department states an examination time of five to seven weeks from a complete application. Biometrics are taken at submission or afterwards in Nicosia or at the district Aliens and Immigration Service.

## How to apply

In the country. Civil Registry and Migration Department (Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection), central offices in Nicosia, in person or through an authorised representative, within three months of arriving in Cyprus.

1. Enter Cyprus as a visitor (visa-free or with a short-stay visa depending on your passport) and gather the documents on the Migration Department's checklist, with official translations and certifications.
2. Within three months of arrival, submit form MVIS8 with the supporting documents at the Migration Department in Nicosia and pay EUR 70 for the permit and EUR 70 for Aliens' Registry registration.
3. Give biometrics (photo, fingerprints, signature) with the submission receipt and your passport, either at the same time or afterwards in Nicosia or at your district immigration unit.
4. Wait five to seven weeks; you will receive a letter explaining how to collect the one-year permit, or the reasons for a refusal.
5. To stay longer, apply for renewal at least one month before expiry with updated proofs; the renewed permit can run up to two years.

## After you arrive

Stay and renewal: The first permit is issued for one year. On renewal the Migration Department issues a permit of up to two years, so the scheme covers at most three years in total. Renewal applications go in at least one month before expiry.

Residence: The scheme page does not say whether digital-nomad years count toward Cypriot long-term resident status, which requires five years of continuous legal residence with a valid permit and excludes people admitted on a purely temporary basis. Treat it as a temporary route until the Migration Department confirms otherwise.

Family: Spouse or civil-union partner and minor children can obtain temporary residence permits for the same period as the digital nomad, each with their own application and fees. They may not work or carry out any economic activity in Cyprus.

Taxes: You become a Cypriot tax resident if you spend more than 183 days in Cyprus in a tax year and are not tax resident elsewhere; tax residents are taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates, with the non-domiciled regime exempting dividend and interest income for up to 17 years. Shorter stays usually leave you taxable only in your home country.

## In practice

- The scheme is capped at 500 permits; applications were paused when the cap was reached and reopened on 31 December 2025, so check the Migration Department page before travelling.
- There is no consular step: you must already be in Cyprus (as a visitor or on another status) to apply, and every foreign document must be officially translated and certified.
- Cyprus is in the EU but not in Schengen, so the permit gives no right to travel in the Schengen area beyond your passport's own visa-free allowance.
- Limassol has the largest international remote-work community; Paphos is cheaper and quieter, with its own airport.

## By passport

| Passports | Note |
| --- | --- |
| EU, EEA, CH | You do not need this permit. EU and EEA citizens register with the Migration Department for a registration certificate (MEU1) after three months in Cyprus. |
| US, GB, CA, AU, NZ, JP | Enter visa-free for up to 90 days and apply at the Migration Department in Nicosia within three months of arrival; there is no need for a prior consular visa. |
| All other passports | If your nationality needs a visa for Cyprus, obtain a short-stay visa at a Cypriot consulate first, then apply for the digital-nomad permit after arrival. The income rule is the same for every nationality. |
