# Cabo Verde remote working visa 2026: requirements and cost

Cabo Verde's Remote Working Program gives self-employed remote workers from Europe, North America, the CPLP and West Africa a six-month temporary visa, renewable once, for a €20 fee and an average bank balance of €1,500 over the last six months (€2,700 for a family). The tourism institute says participants pay no local income tax. Most Europeans can otherwise stay 30 days visa-free.

## Who can apply

The Instituto do Turismo de Cabo Verde (ITCV) opens the programme to 'anyone from Europe, North America, the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)' who is self-employed and can work remotely over the internet without a fixed office. The programme names regions, not countries; the list above is our reading of it (EU, EEA, UK, the European microstates and Western Balkans, Moldova and Ukraine; the US, Canada and Mexico; CPLP members; ECOWAS members, still counting Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which Cabo Verde's visa-exemption list keeps under the ECOWAS free-movement protocol). Borderline passports such as Russia, Türkiye and the Caucasus should ask ITCV. Local employment is not covered.

Eligible passports: AT, BE, BG, HR, CY, CZ, DK, EE, FI, FR, DE, GR, HU, IE, IT, LV, LT, LU, MT, NL, PL, PT, RO, SK, SI, ES, SE, IS, LI, NO, CH, GB, AD, MC, SM, VA, AL, BA, ME, MK, RS, MD, UA, US, CA, MX, AO, BR, GQ, GW, MZ, ST, TL, BJ, BF, CI, GM, GH, GN, LR, ML, NE, NG, SN, SL, TG.

## What you need

- Passport valid for at least six months (and longer than the authorised stay)
- Recent colour passport-style photo, or biometric capture on the platform
- Bank statements for the last six months showing an average balance of at least €1,500 (individual) or €2,700 (family), as proof of income
- Travel and health insurance covering medical costs, evacuation and repatriation of remains
- Proof of means of subsistence for the stay and a return or onward ticket (general temporary-visa rule, shown at the border when the visa is requested online)
- International vaccination certificate (asked for temporary visas)
- Criminal-record certificate from your country of nationality or residence, issued within six months and translated into Portuguese, if the authorities request it
- For a family application, documents proving the relationship (marriage and birth certificates) for each accompanying family member

Income proof: ITCV asks for proof of income as an individual or as a family covering at least the last six months, expressed as a minimum average bank balance of €1,500 (individual) or €2,700 (families) rather than a monthly salary; we use the individual balance as the monthly figure. €1,500 converted at the ECB reference rate of 2026-10-13 (US$1.1188 per euro).

Fee: ITCV lists a visa fee of €20 per person ('amount due through renovation', i.e. also on renewal) and an airport fee of €34 per person charged once on arrival, which is the airport security tax every foreign visitor pays through EASE pre-registration; the consular portal quotes the tax as 3,400 escudos (€30.83). €20 converted at US$1.1188 per euro (ECB, 2026-10-13). Visa requests lodged at the border or inside Cabo Verde carry a surcharge set by ministerial order.

Processing: ITCV states 'approximately 2 weeks' and recommends not travelling before approval; it replies by email with the next steps after the online submission.

## How to apply

Online. Online, through the Remote Working page of the Instituto do Turismo de Cabo Verde (visit-caboverde.com/en/remote-working, formerly remoteworkingcaboverde.com); the visa itself is issued through the government's online visa and pre-registration platform (ease.gov.cv), run for the Direção de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras, and stamped at the border on arrival.

1. Check you are self-employed or otherwise work remotely for clients abroad, hold a passport from Europe, North America, the CPLP or ECOWAS valid for at least six months, and can show six months of statements with an average balance of at least €1,500 (€2,700 for a family).
2. Submit the online registration on ITCV's Remote Working page with your details and the requested documents; ITCV contacts you by email about the following steps and the visa fee of €20 per person.
3. Wait for approval (about two weeks); once accepted you receive an entry permit for the six-month temporary visa. Do not travel before it is granted.
4. Before flying, pre-register on ease.gov.cv and pay the airport security tax (€34 per person, once); the pre-registration is valid for one year.
5. On arrival, present the passport, entry permit, insurance and the other required documents to the border police to receive the entry stamp; to stay beyond six months, request the renewal (or an extension of stay at the DEF, up to a total of one year) before the visa runs out.

## After you arrive

Stay and renewal: A temporary work/tourism visa for six months, with the option of renewing for another six months; ITCV warns that depending on how long you stay you may need to extend the visa 'on the ground'. This matches the foreigners law, under which an ordinary temporary visa allows a 180-day stay and the Direção de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (DEF) can extend the authorised stay up to one year.

Residence: The programme visa is a temporary visa, not a residence track; time on it does not count toward residence. Since Decreto-Lei 13/2025 Cabo Verde also regulates a separate residence visa for professional activity performed remotely for employers or clients outside the country (the government's 'Nómadas Digitais' initiative): it leads to a two-year residence permit, renewable for two-year periods, and permanent residence is possible after five years of temporary residence with knowledge of the national language.

Family: ITCV says you can come alone or bring your family and everyone is welcome; a family applies together under the higher €2,700 average-balance threshold, and each person pays the €20 visa fee and the €34 airport fee. Family members receive the same six-month temporary visa; there is no separate dependant permit. ITCV's page does not detail which relatives count, so ask before applying with adult relatives.

Taxes: ITCV's programme page states that remote workers in Cabo Verde are exempt from income tax. We could not locate the statute behind that statement, so treat it as the tourism institute's assurance rather than a tax ruling: keep paying tax where you remain tax resident, and the temporary visa itself does not make you a Cabo Verdean resident. If you renew to a full year or move to the remote-work residence visa, get local advice, since residents are taxed under the IRPS code.

## In practice

- The programme's own domain (remoteworking.gov.cv, later remoteworkingcaboverde.com) no longer resolves; the live page sits on ITCV's visit-caboverde.com. In October 2026 its 'Register Now' link opened a 'Digital Nomads Cabo Verde' community form for São Vicente (coworking at €100 to €150 a month) rather than a visa form, so email ITCV (turismodecaboverde2020@gmail.com or itcv@mtt.gov.cv) if the form does not ask for your documents.
- The page still lists a COVID-19 requirement (negative PCR test or full vaccination) that Cabo Verde no longer applies at the border; the consular portal lists no health test.
- Every foreign visitor must pre-register on EASE up to five days before travel and pay the airport security tax; those who skip it register on arrival and will in future pay a surcharge.
- From 1 January 2026 nationals of 91 countries (including Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, Egypt, Tunisia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam) must hold a visa issued before arrival, so they route any application through a Cabo Verde embassy.
- Sal (Santa Maria), São Vicente (Mindelo) and Praia on Santiago are the remote-work hubs; the government-backed 'Digital Nomads Cabo Verde' community is based in Mindelo. Inter-island flights carry a separate 150-escudo security tax.

## By passport

| Passports | Note |
| --- | --- |
| EU, EEA, GB | Eligible for the programme. Without it you may stay 30 days visa-free (Resolução 134/2018) after pre-registering on ease.gov.cv and paying the €34 airport tax; a tourism visa for up to 90 days, extendable once, is the next step up. |
| US, CA | Eligible for the programme. US and Canadian passports are not on Cabo Verde's visa-exemption list, so for any visit you request the visa through the EASE platform before flying (or, with a surcharge, at the border); you are not among the nationalities that must obtain it at an embassy. |
| MX | Counted as North America for the programme, but since 1 January 2026 Mexicans must hold a visa before arrival in Cabo Verde, so apply for the programme visa through the nearest Cabo Verde embassy rather than at the border. |
| AO, MZ, ST, GW, BR, TL, GQ, PT | CPLP citizens are eligible. Ordinary passports of Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé e Príncipe and Guinea-Bissau enter visa-free for 180 days under the CPLP agreement; Portugal for 30 days. The consular exemption list names only Brazilian diplomatic, service and special passports, so Brazilians with an ordinary passport should confirm with a consulate or apply through EASE. |
| BJ, BF, CI, GM, GH, GN, LR, ML, NE, NG, SN, SL, TG | ECOWAS citizens are eligible and enter visa-free for 90 days under the free-movement protocol; pre-registration and the airport tax still apply. |
| All other passports | Not covered by the programme unless your passport is from one of its four regions. Any nationality can use the ordinary routes: a tourism visa (90 days, extendable once) or temporary visa (180 days, extendable to one year) requested through ease.gov.cv or an embassy, or the remote-work residence visa regulated in 2025, which asks for an employment or service contract, three months of income and proof of tax residence. |

6 months, renewable up to 1 year. ### Does the Remote Working Program (six-month temporary visa) lead to permanent residence in Cabo Verde?

Not by itself. The programme visa is a temporary visa, not a residence track; time on it does not count toward residence.

### Can family members come with you on the Remote Working Program (six-month temporary visa)?

ITCV says you can come alone or bring your family and everyone is welcome; a family applies together under the higher €2,700 average-balance threshold, and each person pays the €20 visa fee and the €34 airport fee. Family members receive the same six-month temporary visa; there is no separate dependant permit. ITCV's page does not detail which relatives count, so ask before applying with adult relatives.

### Do you pay tax in Cabo Verde on the Remote Working Program (six-month temporary visa)?

ITCV's programme page states that remote workers in Cabo Verde are exempt from income tax.

### Where do you apply for the Remote Working Program (six-month temporary visa)?

Online: Online, through the Remote Working page of the Instituto do Turismo de Cabo Verde (visit-caboverde.com/en/remote-working, formerly remoteworkingcaboverde.com); the visa itself is issued through the government's online visa and pre-registration platform (ease.gov.cv), run for the Direção de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras, and stamped at the border on arrival.

### Can I apply for the Cabo Verde remote working visa after arriving as a tourist?

ITCV wants the online application approved before you travel and says it takes about two weeks. The foreigners law does allow temporary-visa and extension requests inside Cabo Verde through the DEF's digital platform or counters, with a surcharge, and a 30-day visa-free entry can be extended; but the programme's fee and thresholds are set for applications made before departure, so apply from home.

### Does Cabo Verde have a residence visa for digital nomads as well as the six-month programme?

Yes. Decreto-Lei 13/2025 regulates a residence visa for professional activity performed remotely for entities outside Cabo Verde, created under the 'Nómadas Digitais' initiative. It needs a work contract or employer declaration (employees) or company, service contracts or proof of services (freelancers), average income for the last three months, a criminal record and proof of tax residence; the residence visa gives six months to request a two-year residence permit, decided within 90 days of a complete file.
