Nationals who need a visa for Albania request the type D visa for digital mobile workers in the same e-Albania application.

## What you need

- e-Albania application form for the unique permit, printed and signed, with photo
- Valid passport (copy uploaded, original presented later)
- Valid employment contract with an employer outside Albania or service contract with a foreign client, showing the work is done remotely with IT tools
- Proof of sufficient income for yourself and any dependants (bank statements, payslips or invoices)
- Proof of accommodation and address in Albania (rental contract or host declaration)
- Health insurance policy valid in Albania for at least one year
- Criminal-record certificate from your country of origin and from your country of residence, legalised and translated
- Two passport photos taken in the last six months and the fee payment mandate

Income proof: The law itself sets no figure. The implementing decision (DCM 858/2021, most recently amended by DCM 240 of 1 April 2026) fixes the proof of means, and we could not retrieve its text from an official page; the Ministry of Interior guidance page was behind a bot check. Third-party summaries cite income at or above the national minimum wage (ALL 50,000 a month in 2026) or a bank deposit of ALL 300,000 for the year; treat these as unconfirmed. The dataset's old figure of US$387 a month is not an official number.

Fee: e-Albania shows the service fee as depending on the permit type, paid by bank mandate downloaded from the portal, plus the visa fee for visa-required nationals. Third-party guides report ALL 4,500 for a first digital-worker permit and ALL 2,250 for renewal; not confirmed on an official page (Bank of Albania rate 2 October 2026: ALL 81.80 per US dollar).

Processing: e-Albania states 8 days from application when the documents are correct and up to 12 weeks when deficiencies have to be fixed; each institution involved must act within two weeks. After approval the permit is generated with an electronic stamp once you enter Albania.

## How to apply

1. Register on e-Albania, open Aplikim për Leje Unike, choose the motive Lëvizës Digital (and the type D visa subtype for digital mobile workers if your nationality needs a visa) and download the fee payment mandate.
2. Complete the electronic form, upload the foreign employment or service contract, proof of income, accommodation, one-year health insurance and criminal-record certificates, then submit and print and sign the form.
3. Within 5 days the migration officer flags any gaps and gives you up to 30 days to fix them; once accepted you have 8 days to post the originals, two photos, the paid fee mandate, a passport copy and the signed form.

5. Apply for renewal on e-Albania within 60 days before expiry; a temporary electronic permit covers you for up to two months while the renewal is assessed.

## After you arrive

Stay and renewal: Law 79/2021 art. 68 issues the first permit for up to one year. Renewal is requested on e-Albania within 60 days before expiry; the law and portal do not state a cap on renewals for this category.

Residence: Law 79/2021 provides a permanent residence permit after five years of continuous legal residence, but neither the law's digital-worker article nor the e-Albania pages say whether years on this permit count; confirm with the Border and Migration authority.

Family: Family members of a permit holder can apply on e-Albania for residence permits for family reunification with a foreigner who holds a valid Albanian residence permit; the law requires the sponsor's income to cover dependants.

Taxes: You become an Albanian tax resident after 183 days in a tax year and are then taxed on worldwide income; employment income is taxed at progressive rates and self-employment income under the business-income rules. Albania's foreigner rules announced a first-year exemption for digital mobile workers, but we could not confirm it on an official page, so budget for tax from day one.

## In practice

- The route is dedicated and in force: Law 79/2021 art. 68 (amended June 2025) creates the permit and e-Albania accepts applications under the motive Lëvizës Digital, so it is treated as a digital nomad visa.
- You must be legally in Albania when the permit is granted; visa-free nationals enter first, while visa-required nationals get the type D visa approved by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs inside the same application.
- Albania's unique-permit rules change often (DCM 858/2021 has been amended more than ten times, most recently on 1 April 2026); check the e-Albania service page for the current document list and fee before applying.
- Tirana is the only sizeable city; Albania is outside the EU and Schengen, so the permit gives no travel rights elsewhere.

## By passport

| Passports | Note |
| --- | --- |
| EU, EEA, CH | EU citizens enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180 and still need this permit (or another residence permit) to stay longer; EU citizens are exempt from employment approval but the residence permit is required. |
| US, GB, CA, AU, NZ, JP | Enter visa-free (US citizens may stay up to one year visa-free, others 90 days in 180) and file the e-Albania application while in the country; no consular visa is needed. |
| All other passports | If you need a visa for Albania, select the type D visa for digital mobile workers inside the e-Albania unique-permit application; the visa is approved by the foreign ministry before the permit is issued. |
